About Hostpicker
Hostpicker is an independent directory of hosting providers, written by an indie developer who got tired of SEO listicles that rank by commission rate. Every entry here is a real assessment, with named cons.
Methodology
Each provider page is built from the same template:
- Pricing is taken from the provider's official pricing page, in USD where possible. We re-check quarterly; the date is on every detail page.
- Pros and cons reflect a current opinion based on operator experience, public benchmarks, and recent customer reports — not marketing copy.
- Specs (RAM, vCPU, disk, bandwidth) are from the cheapest plan in each major tier; we don't list every SKU.
- Strengths are tagged based on where each provider is genuinely best-in-class, not on which one pays us most.
We don't take payment for inclusion. Every host that fits the directory's scope (developer-friendly compute) is welcome regardless of whether they have an affiliate program.
Affiliate disclosure
Some links on this site contain affiliate codes. If you sign up through one and the provider has a referral program, we get a small credit or commission. This is how the site pays for itself.
What this changes: nothing. The pros, cons, ranking, and quiz logic are written before we look at affiliate payouts, and we deliberately list providers (Hetzner, Netcup, RackNerd, GitHub Pages) that have no affiliate program at all when they're the right answer.
How we mark them: any link that contains an affiliate code carries a "Link contains an affiliate code" note next to the call-to-action button on the provider's detail page.
Why this exists
Search "best VPS for indie developer" and you get pages of content marketing — most of it ranking the host with the highest payout. There's a market gap for an opinionated, named-cons-included directory written by someone who has actually deployed projects on these hosts.
That's the goal. If you spot something inaccurate, the contact link in the footer goes to a real inbox.
