Hetzner Cloud

European VPS with the best price/performance ratio, period.

Hetzner is the answer for most indie projects that don't need managed services. A €4.51/mo CX22 will run a Django + Postgres + Redis stack for a side project that gets thousands of visitors per day, with headroom. AMD EPYC dedicated-core (CCX) plans cost half what equivalent dedicated-CPU instances cost on DigitalOcean or Linode, and the included 20 TB of bandwidth means a viral moment doesn't end with a bandwidth bill.

The catch: Hetzner is a "you do the ops" host. There's no managed Postgres, no managed Redis, no Heroku-style git push deployments. If you're comfortable with a Docker Compose file or a tool like Coolify, that's not a problem — and for most indie SaaS, the savings vs. a PaaS pay for an extra year of runway. If you're allergic to Linux, look at Railway or Fly.io instead.

Pros & cons

What works
  • + Cheapest credible VPS in the market — €4.51/mo for 2 vCPU + 4 GB RAM
  • + AMD EPYC and Intel Sapphire Rapids in newer generations
  • + 20 TB of bandwidth included on entry-level plans
  • + GDPR-native, EU data residency by default
What doesn't
  • Account verification can take days for non-EU signups
  • No managed Postgres or Redis — you run them yourself
  • No US-east region (closest is Hillsboro, OR or Ashburn, VA)
  • Sparse one-click apps catalogue compared to DigitalOcean
