Linode (Akamai Cloud)

Twenty years of unflashy, reliable Linux hosting — now part of Akamai.

Linode predates "the cloud" as a marketing term and has spent twenty years selling Linux VMs without much drama. Akamai bought them in 2022 and has been steadily adding edge / enterprise products on top, but the core VPS offering remains: a clean dashboard, predictable pricing, and the best technical guides on the internet.

For most workloads Linode's shared-CPU pricing is identical to DigitalOcean. The differences show up at the edges: more bundled bandwidth on cheap plans, free DDoS on every instance, but pricier dedicated-CPU tiers.

Pros & cons

What works
  • + Akamai backbone means very stable peering globally
  • + 5 GB free DDoS protection on every plan
  • + Excellent Linux-focused community guides (older than Stack Overflow)
  • + Same price points as DO for shared CPU but more bandwidth bundled
What doesn't
  • Acquisition by Akamai in 2022 bolted on enterprise features that confuse the dashboard
  • Dedicated CPU plans cost noticeably more than Hetzner CCX
  • No managed Redis (only Postgres and MySQL)
